Some traditional releases are:
- Spirit dove: representing the loved one
- 2 doves: one is released representing a loved one gone before.
- 3 doves: to many, symbolizes the holy trinity
- Flock of Angels: up to 15 birds are released representing angels in the heavens, the spirit dove is released soon after and joins them.
Funeral Release
The dove has long been a symbol of hope and peace. It also carries a religious significance to many people. Releasing a dove at the grave site can provide a moment of comfort and beauty during this most difficult and sad time.
A reading is suggested before the release to provide meaning to the dove. We also recommend releasing the doves to a favorite song or music. We can provide a selection of songs and poems to choose from, or you can provide us with your own.
The doves can be released by hand if requested. Touching or holding the bird before setting it free can sometimes give people a deeper meaning to the symbolism of the release. Please let us know if this is important to you.
The bird is usually released at the grave site, or directly outside the church from a wooden basket. If you want the dove to be displayed at the service, this too, can be arranged.
